Type: Vertical Lift
Location: Mobile, AL
Client: CSX Transportation
This project involved the replacement of an existing railroad swing span with a new vertical lift span on the same alignment. The lift span towers and foundations were constructed with both the navigation channel and the railroad in service. The swing span was removed and the new lift span installed during a forty-two-hour railroad closure and a seventy-two-hour navigation closure.
SBE personnel provided engineering services to the contractor (Scott Bridge) throughout the construction period. Our services included review of the mechanical and electrical contract documents for constructability issues, preparation of machinery installation and jacking procedures, span balance calculations and on-site services during the closure.
SBE’s review of the drawings revealed both design and constructability concerns early in the construction process. The concerns were presented to the contractor along with a suggested recommendation for resolution. This proactive approach to the project allowed the contractor to solve problems early on and avoid significant issues during the closure period. As a result, the new lift span was installed per the requirements of the contract documents during the allocated closure period.
