Stafford Bandlow Engineering conducted an in-depth mechanical inspection of the operating and support machinery for the Fort George Ferry Slip Bridge (Bridge No. 720934) and the Mayport Ferry Slip Bridge (Bridge No. 720933) in Jacksonville, Florida. The support machinery for these structures is comprised of bearings at the heel end and counterweights at the toe end. The counterweights are supported by wire ropes and sheaves mounted in towers. The spans are operated via an electric chain hoist with a manual backup. Multiple critical deficiencies were identified through the course of the inspections including seriously degraded main counterweight wire ropes and a seized main counterweight sheave trunnion bearing.
