Stafford Bandlow Engineering has been involved in multiple projects on the Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial Bridges dating back  to 1997.

In 1997, SBE provided an in-depth inspection of Marine Parkway tower drive vertical lift bridge which included detailed inspection of all mechanical machinery and inspection and testing of the bridge electrical systems. SBE prepared a comprehensive report detailing inspection findings, assessing bridge conditions and recommending repairs. During 1999 – 2003, SBE provided strain gage balance testing of the lift span throughout the course of a deck replacement project. The scope of the balance work included performing balance calculations to maintain the balance of the lift span throughout the construction period. A total of twelve separate strain gage balance tests were performed over the project period. SBE also performed strain gage testing as part of the bottom chord replacement work during this time period. SBE instrumented and monitored the jacking frame, the existing bottom chords and the new bottom chords to establish the load levels in the existing members and verify that they were properly transferred to the new members. SBE provided daily reports to document the progress of the work as well as a comprehensive summary report at the completion of work.

From 2007 through 2009, SBE provided four separate strain gage balance tests of the lift span throughout the course of painting and miscellaneous repairs to the lift span. The scope of the balance work included performing balance calculations to maintain the balance of the lift span throughout the construction period.

During 2013 to 2016 SBE provided load testing services to assist in establishing the transverse imbalance and how loading of the lift span was contributing to electrical faults. SBE also provided engineering oversight to assist with repairs to the auxiliary clutch collars.

Finally, from 2016 to present SBE has provided engineering support on Marine Parkway Bridge project MP03 as a consultant to the prime contractor Kiska. Involvement has included constructability review of the mechanical design drawings, engineering a workable and reliable solution to engage the auxiliary drive while bypassing the faulty auxiliary clutch and return the bridge to operational service, perform wire rope tension measurements for the new main counterweight wire ropes and perform strain gage testing to validate the loading of the newly installed machinery. As a result of this work SBE is familiar with the ongoing construction work and the design of the new machinery systems.
