SBE provided on-site field support to Norfolk Southern following the failure of three operating ropes on this span drive vertical lift bridge.  Within twelve hours of being notified of the failure, SBE mobilized and traveled to the site to assist Norfolk Southern with the emergency repairs necessary to return this bridge to service.

On-site activities comprised working with Norfolk Southern personnel to assess the extent of the damage, discussing repair options, and working with the fab shop and contractor to ensure that the repairs were performed in a timely, effective and safe manner. The primary repairs, in addition to the replacement of the failed ropes, involved repairing damage to the operating drum and its supports.  Also, as part of the initial evaluation of the failure, SBE helped Norfolk Southern identify problems with nonfunctional span guide rollers which require future repairs.  As part of the repairs, SBE assisted Norfolk Southern in correcting damage to the operating drum grooves, in verifying the installation and alignment of the repaired operating rope drums, and in equalizing the rope tensions in the newly installed ropes following initial bridge operations.

The repair involved a near continuous effort on the part of the work crew from the failure on Thursday, May 13th until the bridge was returned to service early on the morning of Tuesday, May 17th.
